Engaging both hemispheres of the brain to process trauma, themes, and internal narratives can be done through bilateral drawing or what’s known as Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) or a combination of the two. At Ten Four you will have the opportunity to explore various materials and different procedures to find what works best for you when processing difficult thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

There are a myriad of ways we become disconnected from our bodies— ranging from daily societal demands to unaddressed trauma, across the spectrum, and over time our bodies hold and store these experiences and memories. Until these experiences are felt, acknowledged, and metabolized by the body they may manifest as symptoms that alter your quality of life. Through somatic and body-based approaches, a therapist may guide you through something like a grounding exercise (breathing, body scan, etc.) or movement to help you reconnect to the present moment.

Art Therapy

Whether you use creative arts (making art, movement, music, writing) as a way to make sense of the world or if you haven’t picked up a paintbrush since elementary school— creating as a part of therapy can help regulate our nervous systems, aid in better understanding the subconscious and help us tell important stories. Although a product can be powerful and meaningful, most importantly in art therapy it is the process of creating itself that allows a transfer of the internal to external.
